Zanzibar Revolution Day

Today, 12th January, is a public holiday in Tanzania. It is to commemorate the revolution in 1964 that ended 200 years of Arab dominance in Zanzibar. It was only after this revolution and their new found independence that the new President negotiated a merger between the mainland Tanganyika and the island Zanzibar. Their governments combined to form a new nation and the names were combined to form the name, Tanzania. Did you know that?

Here is Emanuel trying to explain the merger to me this morning by mooshing bits of dirt together.

In reality this just means that the town is very quiet today. I get the feeling that the Tanzanians like a public holiday just as much as the Aussies. There was only one doctor in Casualty this morning. The others just seemed to saunter in around 11 or so. Hakuna Matata/No worries.

I am feeling much better though. My legs feel like they've regained their suspension and I coughed up whatever piece of lung was troubling me last night and seemed to have cured the problem. Lots of rest and a special trip to the supermarket to buy some decent tea and supplies for PB&J sandwiches also cheered me up immensely. I think I'm nearly ready for next week's adventure. I'll tell you about it soon!

Till next time x
